Child protection engagements with school children

The Department of Community Development sensitized students in Rochester School Complex in Atadeka community. Students were engaged on Adolescents and Social Media with the Child Protection toolkits. The facilitator conducted a presentation focusing on the impact of media on adolescents, utilizing adolescent protection flashcards for educational purposes. The aim was to raise awareness among students about the potential consequences of early exposure to media for both children and parents. Following the use of flashcards and the spoon full of life activity, the presentation delved into the interpretation of the images and their relevance to interactions with the adolescents. A story was shared by an adolescent, illustrating how some youths use their parents’ phones to access inappropriate content like pornography instead of utilizing them for educational purposes. Others shared experiences of peers posting inappropriate images on their phones without parental knowledge. The presentation highlighted the consequences of parents avoiding discussions about sex education with their children, emphasizing the importance of addressing this issue. Furthermore, concerns were raised about parents’ lack of understanding of smart phones, prompting a call for parents to acquire basic knowledge about the devices they use.
