The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has commissioned a newly constructed FIFA-standard Astroturf at the Gbawe Cluster of Schools, a project undertaken through a collaboration involving Oxygen Ghana, the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, the land grantors, and the Coastal Development Authority (CODA).
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, she pointed out that the initiative reflects a shared vision of improving sports infrastructure, fostering youth development, and creating opportunities for talented athletes in the municipality. The facility, she said, has a seating capacity of about 60,000 and features modern changing rooms, toilets with showers, and a cafeteria to provide a conducive environment for both players and spectators.
The Regional Minister emphasized that the project was designed to reduce the financial burden on the government adding that, by leveraging partnerships, resources could be reinvested into maintaining the park and ensuring its long-term sustainability without reliance on public funds.
She further stated that sports, particularly football, plays a vital role in uniting communities, inspiring the youth, creating employment, and instilling discipline. She added that the facility would serve as a breeding ground for future stars and urged all stakeholders to ensure its proper maintenance for the benefit of generations to come.
Hon. Ocloo extended her gratitude to all stakeholders, particularly Oxygen Ghana and the land grantors, for their commitment and support in making the project a reality. She encouraged young people interested in sports to seize the opportunity to nurture their talents and aim for excellence.
“Together, let’s continue to invest in sports, infrastructure, and the well-being of our communities,” she stated.
Also present at the event was the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who underscored the significance of the project as a public-private partnership (PPP) with Oxygen Capital as the majority shareholder. He urged the private sector to prioritize community benefits alongside financial gains and called for consensus on how best to utilize and maintain the facility to serve both sporting and social needs.
The commissioning of the Weija-Gbawe Astroturf marks a significant step in promoting sports development and fostering unity within the municipality.
