SPILLAGE OF WEIJA DAM CAUSES FLOODS IN ACCRA

Six gates of the Weija Dam was on Tuesday 4th October opened to connect water into the sea which has caused serious flood in some parts of Accra.

According to Alhaji Hassan Gamandzi, Regional Hydro Director of NADMO, this became necessary due to the high increasing rainfall from the Eastern Region moving the water level to 49.2ft.
This situation he said was likely to cause damage to the Dam hence the need to open all the gates of the dam to spill off the water to save the dam.

This is said is the highest in the history of the dam with over 500 people displaced with the rescue team still moving around to move residents to safety.
He noted that assessment of the situation is on going as it gets bad by the day but added that the Nadmo operation team, 48 Engineers, the Ghana police/Marine police personnel’s are all on the field assisting in rescuing those trap in their various homes to a safe heavens.

Additionally Municipalities affected in the region are the Weija-Gbawe, Ga South and the Ga West Municipal Assemblies.
