Accra, Ghana – 3rd August 2025 — The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), under the chairmanship of Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, Greater Accra Greater Minister, has engaged in a series of high-level peacebuilding meetings with leaders of the Kusaase and Mamprusi communities living in the Greater Accra Region. The meetings, which took place on the 29th and 30th July, and1st August 2025, were in response to rising tensions and violence believed to be linked to the longstanding Bawku conflict in the Upper East Region.
Addressing the meeting, Hon. Ocloo stated that although Bawku remains the epicentre of the tribal clashes, the impact of the conflict has begun to reverberate in other parts of the country, particularly in the Greater Accra Region. Adding that, a recent violent incident in Tulaku, Tema, which led to the shooting of three individuals, prompted REGSEC to take immediate action to prevent further escalation.
The Mamprusi delegation was led by Naa AZakaria Guma Bangmarigu, while the Kusaase delegation was headed by Chief Dr. Mohammed Sungtaaba. Both traditional leaders expressed strong commitment to peace and urged their respective communities, especially the youth, to remain calm and refrain from acts of violence.
In their statements, the two leaders pledged to support REGSEC’s peace efforts and called on their people to uphold harmony while leadership continues to work behind the scenes toward a long-term resolution.
The emergency meetings were part of REGSEC’s proactive strategy to curb the spread of the Bawku conflict into the capital and maintain peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups residing in the region.
Hon. Ocloo noted that,
“The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council remains dedicated to fostering dialogue and non-violence as the cornerstone of regional stability,”. Adding that,
“We urge all communities to support this mission for the benefit of all.”
She reiterated REGSEC’s commitment to working closely with traditional leaders and security agencies to ensure calm and security across the region.
