REJOINDER TO MEDIA REPORTS ALLEGING AUTHORIZATION FOR THE SALE OF LIVESTOCK ON THE KANDA HIGHWAY, ROAD MEDIANS AND OTHER PRINCIPAL STREETS IN ACCRA

The attention of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has been drawn to media reports, including publications and broadcasts by GHOne TV and other media outlets, alleging that the Council authorized the sale of livestock on the Kanda Highway, road medians and other principal streets within the Accra Metropolis. The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council wishes to categorically state that neither the Council nor the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has granted authorization to any individual, group or association to engage in the sale of livestock on the Kanda Highway, road medians or any principal street within the Greater Accra Region. The reports are therefore inaccurate, misleading and do not reflect the position of the Regional Coordinating Council. Indeed, upon becoming aware of the increasing practice of displaying and selling livestock along the Kanda Highway, road medians and other principal streets, the Regional Coordinating Council took immediate steps to address the matter. A stakeholder engagement was subsequently convened involving officials of the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, operators engaged in the activity and other relevant stakeholders. At the meeting, serious concerns were raised regarding the safety implications of the practice, including the risk posed to motorists, pedestrians and the animals themselves, as well as its adverse effect on traffic flow and the orderly use of public spaces. Consequently, operators were directed to remove their livestock from the affected locations and relocate their activities to more appropriate and designated areas. It is therefore unfortunate and surprising that reports have emerged suggesting that the Regional Coordinating Council sanctioned an activity which it has actively engaged stakeholders to address and discontinue. The Regional Coordinating Council wishes to assure residents of Greater Accra of its unwavering commitment to public safety, environmental sanitation and the orderly management of public spaces across the region. The Council respectfully calls on GHOne TV and all other media houses that carried the story to correct the erroneous impression created by their reports and provide the public with accurate information regarding the position of the Regional Coordinating Council on this matter. Accordingly, the Council hereby demands that GHOne TV immediately retract the publication and broadcast in question and issue an unqualified public apology to the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and the Greater Accra Regional Minister for the reputational damage caused by the false reportage. The Council further reserves all legal rights and remedies available under the laws of the Republic of Ghana and shall not hesitate to pursue appropriate legal action should the false and defamatory publications remain uncorrected. The public is hereby advised to disregard any claims suggesting that the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has authorized the sale of livestock on the Kanda Highway, road medians or any principal streets within the region, as no such authorization has been granted.
