The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has held a meeting with all Coordinating Directors within the 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to outlined her vision to enhance street lighting across key roads in the region.
During discussions, she announced a 50-day deadline for the repair and installation of streetlights, emphasizing the need for collaboration to achieve this goal.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Directors who are key stakeholders to engage with the Minister, understand her vision, and discuss pressing issues such as sanitation, security, and city lighting. They accordingly, highlighted the increasing concern over sanitation, prompting recent market inspections to ensure cleanliness.
In response to concerns about streetlight maintenance, the Regional Highway Director, Ing Odai Laryea clarified that while streetlight installation falls under the Ministry of Energy, ongoing road projects have led to the removal of some lights. He further noted that major roads lack adequate lighting, with theft of wires and cables posing a significant challenge. Adding that plans are underway to introduce solar-powered streetlights to curb these issues.
The regional Director of Urban Roads Adwoa Duku, also noted that some of the previous installations were supported by private donors and urged stakeholders to collaborate with contractors to meet the 50-day deadline.
The Dean of Coordinating Directors in Accra, Mr. Emmanuel Baisi, Coordinating Director for the Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly pledged the support of all his colleagues to ensure that the vision of the Minister is realized to ensure the urban development needed in Accra.
The meeting concluded with a strong emphasis on teamwork, with the Hon. Minister reaffirming her commitment to improving regional infrastructure and security. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance safety and mobility across key areas.
