The Chief Director of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), Mrs. Lilian Baeka, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs) to prioritize staff rationalization, timely handling of public complaints, and strict compliance with audit queries as part of the region’s 2026 agenda.
Speaking at the first quarterly meeting of MMDCD’s on January 15, 2026, Mrs. Baeka welcomed all Coordinating Directors of the 29 MMDA’s into the new year and commended them for their dedication, commitment and cooperation the previous year.
She announced the commencement of a regional staff rationalization exercise following a directive from the Head of the Local Government Service, citing staffing disparities across the assemblies which affect efficiency and service delivery. Accordingly, she called on Coordinating Directors to support the exercise fully for a successful exercise.
Mrs. Baeka, also disclosed that her usual unannounced visit to the assemblies will commence as a matter of urgency to assess administrative efficiency, staff presence, record-keeping, and service standards in the local government service. She emphasized that the visits are meant to strengthen accountability and not to intimidate staff.
On public petitions and complaints, the Chief Director expressed concern over delays by some assemblies and directed that all such matters be treated urgently within the shortest possible time with appropriate documented responses. She further stressed that, moving forward, the RCC, will closely monitor compliance and apply sanctions where necessary.
Mrs. Baeka, intimated that she is intalks with leadership to ensure that Coordinating Directors’ retreat comes off in the second quarter of the year and it will focus on capacity building, peer learning, and strategic planning.
Touching on sanitation, street lighting, and audit issues, She commended progress made so far by some assemblies urging that assemblies cited in the 2024 Auditor-General’s report must urgently address outstanding infractions to avoid sanctions.
